Lauren Hill is a current member of the Mount St. Joseph’s University women’s basketball team. The school is located in Ohio and competes at the NCAA Division III level. What makes Lauren’s presence on the team so amazing is that she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor about a year ago, at which time the doctors gave her only two years to live. In recent months, however, Lauren’s life expectancy has been shortened to next month (December).
With this in mind, her college’s administration petitioned the NCAA to move the team’s first game up two weeks to November 2, so Lauren could play in the game. The NCAA granted the school’s request and the game vs Hiram was rescheduled to the 10,000 seat Xavier University in Cincinnati. All tickets to the game were sold out in one hour!
As you watch the video, remember as we approach Thanksgiving and the Christmas season that each day we are given is a true gift. Our next heartbeat is not guaranteed, so let’s make the most of every interaction and opportunity we have in this short and fragile lifetime. This video is not meant to make anybody feel guilty, but rather to encourage thankfulness for Lauren’s life and for the life God has given each of us. Lauren’s dream was to walk out onto a college court, look down at her basketball shoes, and feel the vibration of the crowd on that wooden floor. What an incredible thing to be thankful for!
Maybe we all can pause with our loved ones this holiday season, and express our love and appreciation for the people in our lives that we are closest to. We all have a tremendous amount to be thankful for, especially for all the gifts that God has bestowed upon us. So many of them are easy to forget.
The verse on the back of the team’s t-shirts is taken from Joshua 1:9:
“Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or be discouraged, for the Lord your God goes with you wherever you go.”
