Since 1969 Summer’s Best Two Weeks has accepted inner-city campers predominantly from Pittsburgh in each term, seeking to complete the vision of transforming America from the inside out. In the mid to late 90’s, conversations began with Kids Across America to establish an urban resident camp on the east coast. Beginning in 1999 SB2W partnered with KAA to operate one full week of urban campers at the end of the traditional camp season. That partnership continued through 2005.
Timotheus Pope was hired as the director of the Citikidz camp in September 2005 and began to provide dedicated leadership to the growing ministry. In 2006, due to demand, SB2Dub Citikidz expanded to YMCA Camp T. Frank Soles. We have operated one week of training and three one-week sessions for urban campers the last four years at Soles. As the program has built a more solid network of inner city relationships and the numbers of campers have grown, we have prayed about a full time facility that would be dedicated to Citikidz.
In the fall of 2012 Laurel Mountain Christian Camp was graciously gifted to SB2W by Tom and Sandy Usher. LMCC is a beautiful 130 acre camp that is located in Rector Pennsylvania, in the heart of the Laurel Highlands. Citikidz at LMCC ran three weeks in the summer of 2012 and is doubling its capacity for 2013.
“We are extremely grateful for this tremendous gift and recognize that we have a responsibility to operate and grow this ministry,” Kent Biery, executive director of SB2W. Daily American Newspaper
